Logo Design Case Study

  1. Working Knowledge of Graphic Design Software and Digital Tools
  • Canva is a graphic design tool that I have had the pleasure of working with for about six years. I have created hundreds of designs using this tool and I am most proud of my “Science & Discovery” logo design. Through this design I demonstrate my ability to navigate through Canva to create original works. My working knowledge of the use of tools in Canva such as crop, rescaling and image navigation allowed me to customize the design with special elements. For example, the butterfly was copied, and one was cropped and resized and both pieces of the butterfly were placed to appear to be magnified under the glass.
  1. Elements of Design
  • The Elements of Design are clearly represented with the use of balance of color, contrast and elements. For example, The S&D profile Logo elements are all centered in the circular border, including that of the butterfly and magnifying glass images. This updated version of the logo also presents a brighter color scheme to entice audiences. I also included darker shadows also brings out the text for legibility. The bold black elements are also placed in different parts of the design to lead the audience throughout the design.
  1. Creative Self-Expression and Originality
  • This design is intended for the Science & Discovery programs being offered at Nueces County Public Libraries. This is a program that I have had the privilege of starting at the library and was my inspiration for creating this Logo Design. As this program is also an environmental class that allows youth to explore the natural world, I included the butterfly and magnifying glass as a representation. I also attempted to include vibrant colors and elements to reflect the playful nature of children who are ready to explore the wonders of nature.
  1. Evidence of Thoughtful and Appropriate Critique Skills
  • I believe that my critique skills have improved as I have the confidence to share my thoughts with my classmates and colleagues. I do enjoy lifting people up and celebrating their accomplishments, however I also find giving constructive criticism is also critical to improvement of anything. For example, for the Module four discussion I commented on that of Hayden Willis post as I commented that I had enjoyed the Duelfest designs as it clearly conveyed the goal of the design. However, I also mentioned that a few of the designs could use some revisions such as back and drop shadows to improve legibility (Jaquez, 2024).
  1. Evidence of Following Directions
  • As this was a self-given project I focused on the intention of the logo. The goal was to reach the parents of prospective youth students that would be interested in an educational program. Therefore, I took the activities that are done in the program into consideration and included them in the design. For example, the use of colors such as bright colors such as orange, pink and especially green to represent nature. For parents looking for programs for their even younger children the S&D toddler logo also took into consideration more playful colors and placement of the elements. By also creating multiple versions of the design also complies to the social media platforms contributed to by the library for marketing purposes.
  1. Craftsmanship and Attention to Detail
  • The attention to Detail in the design is represented by the choices of color and placement of each element. Each element was placed with consideration of programs goals and intended audiences, such as the butterfly to represent the environmental exploration that is offered through the program. However, editing the logos including the toddler version of the logo also offers opportunities of detailed work. For example, the toddler version of the logo includes colorful shapes to represent the playful and colorful world that is associated with young children. This logo was also edited to transparent the shapes so that the audience focuses on the text and are not distracted by the shapes.
