Nature-Based Learning Bookmarks Case Study

  1. Working Knowledge of Graphic Design Software and Digital Tools
  • For the Nature-Based Learning Bookmark I used an Online Graphic Design Tool called Canva. In this platform I was able to create shapes and use the automatic alignment tools to keep all elements in balance with one another. By also including new technology such as a QR code for the user to learn more about the programs, it demonstrates my knowledge of the public’s current general knowledge of technological abilities as users.
  1. Elements of Design
  • Each program was placed in opposite of the other creating a balance in information and imagery. The arrangement of the text begins at the top left and moves fluidly from right to left and back again creating a sense of hierarchy to properly process the information as intended. The colors chosen for the design also aid in the hierarchy but also represent nature in support of the design message.
  1. Creative Self-Expression and Originality
  • I have been lucky enough to receive certification to lead youth in each of these programs and have created this bookmark to inform the public. Instead of a large flyer I chose to create a bookmark as it is for a library, and it is also functional. In refining this piece, I have changed the size of the text and placed three bookmarks to fit onto one letter sized page for printing.
  1. Evidence of Thoughtful and Appropriate Critique Skills
  • I feel that the critique I received from Tim Pike on the discussion board allowed me to have the confidence to refine this piece. As he mentioned that the nature pieces have a good layout and color scheme (Pike, 2024). Therefore, my focus went to the text size and legibility allowing me to enhance my design.
  1. Evidence of Following Directions
  • The goal of the project was to inform the public of the nature-based learning programs available at the library. Even though a flyer would have been easier to place all of the intended information, it would have been too much text and would have put off readers. Therefore, I created a functional bookmark instead and shortened and enlarged the text for legibility. However, if the reader wanted to learn more, I also included a QR code on the information page.
  1. Craftsmanship and Attention to Detail
  • There are several examples of craftsmanship represented in this project. As a former printshop worker I have a working knowledge of the necessary sizes of prints that would lessen waste. Placing three bookmarks on a letter size page allows the printing to be more cost effective and environmentally friendly, which supports the message of the bookmark itself. Also ensuring all sponsors and organizational logos are present is another important detail that is necessary.
