Custom Business Cards Case Study

  1. Working Knowledge of Graphic Design Software and Digital Tools
  • I used Canva to create this design as it is a platform provided by my place of employment to create our advertisements. Using this online digital tool has allowed me to create a business card sized design while also having access to images and elements for the design. This Digital Tool also allows me to create duplicates of the design to change elements like names and email addresses while still being able to download only certain pages in different file formats. Also, printing the business cards multiple to a page can also be done with the resize option.
  1. Elements of Design
  • The use of alignment to demonstrate hierarchical elements is present in the text as well as the icons. For example, the labels on the card are in bold and aligned to the image on the left while the informational text is aligned to the icons on the left. However, on the back of the business card the QR code is aligned to the right of the card as well as the image of the library books.
  1. Creative Self-Expression and Originality
  • This custom business card showcases my self-expression as I have included an element at the bottom right that represents the interests or specialty of the individual. Another unique element is the difference between the front of the business card to the back. The book image is more present in the front versus the back due to the QR code in the back of the card.
  1. Evidence of Thoughtful and Appropriate Critique Skills
  • I believe that I use thoughtful and appropriate critique skills when I critique others. For example, I critiqued Tim Pike’s work in the Module Two Discussion and I left positive feedback regarding his logo design, typography profile, and the Lil’ Guppies project. I also provided constructive feedback for his Amethyst Bay advertisement as the file appeared to be blurry. Which I believe could look unprofessional if delivered in that state therefore by mentioning the blurry image in the feedback would hopefully help his portfolio.
  1. Evidence of Following Directions
  • I also believe that this card clearly conveys the organization being a library as it includes a shelf of books. As the custom business cards were a request from my fellow employees, I feel that I was successful at including each of their personalities in each design. However, the one business card that I have presented in this portfolio is an example of a template that could be altered to be more custom to that of an individual.
  1. Craftsmanship and Attention to Detail
  • One example of my attention to detail in the design of the business card is the inclusion of the different social media platforms of which the organization uses. Other elements that are detailed are the small icon on the bottom right corner to convey the individual’s specialty. The organization logo near the center of the card at the front of the card, and the imagery are also forms of details that help convey the intended message. The QR code that is included in this design currently goes to the library I work at but can be easily switched with that of the desired website.
